World-class soloist; singer, songwriter and gifted musician. Miraculous
bouzouki and mandolin playing. Founder member of Sweeney's Men, Planxty;
Patrick Street.
If anyone doubts that music is a timeless and universal language, they
should consider the career of Andy Irvine: A definitely twenty first
century artist whose material ranges from the centuries old music of
Ireland to Woody Guthrie, from the music of Eastern Europe to modern
compositions.
He has earned an audience that spans the continents of Europe, Australia
and North America with his rare talent. He was pursuing an acting career
in the late fifties and happened upon the work of Woody Guthrie. Interest
sparked and he promptly switched to folk style guitar, adding harmonica
and mandolin (and mandola, bouzouki and hurdy-gurdy) along the way.
Thus began an open-ended musical odyssey that has developed into one
of the most impressive pedigrees on the international traditional scene.
'Andy Irvine has been one of Ireland's most creative talents for nearly
twenty years.' -Boston Globe
'Irvine turned in a dazzling display of one-man bandsmanship.'
-The Scotsman
'What makes an evening with Irvine so special is that every note he
picks and every line he sings comes from the heart. Everything he touches
is performed with honesty and conviction and his playing is never less
than breathtaking.' -Sydney Morning Herald
