John McSherry's At First Light

John McSherry won two All Ireland championship titles by the age of fifteen; at eighteen he was the youngest ever winner of the senior 'Oireachtas' piping competition. Founder member of Tamalin and Lunasa, and member of Donal Lunny's super group Coolfin, he is fifteen years later a world renowned virtuoso of the uillean pipes.

The band is available  as a three piece, four piece and five piece band, the last  including the equally astonishing Michael McGoldrick.    In the four piece version of the band, John is joined by  by Donal O'Connor (Fiddle, Keyboards), described by Fintan Vallely as 'one of the outstanding players of his generation; Tony Byrne (Guitar, Vocals); and Francis McIlduff (Bodhran, Uilleann Pipes & Low Whistles), all superb musicians with  an impressive track record.

‘...the most fearless adventurer is piper John McSherry, who can build a whirling spiralling solo in almost John Coletraneish style...’ Coolfin - album review, Alistair Clark (Sept 1998)

‘McSherry's bending and sliding of the notes on his uilleann pipes is wonderful. There are notes here to sublimely twist your eardrums and send shivers down your spine, enticing you back for more....  …John conclusively demonstrates his virtuoso status in the art of uilleann piping.’Kit Bailey - BBC Folk Review (2001)

Of the four piece band: ‘When four of the busiest young maestros on the traditional Irish music scene get together, it's sure to have trad fans wetting their lips and queuing up for tickets... So make a note now to hear this formidable foursome on their travels.’  Neil Johnston - Belfast Telegraph/Tradmusic.com
